The difference between Water Chiller system and VRV system

DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN WATER CHILLER SYSTEM AND VRV SYSTEM

1. General description:

– Water Chiller system is a system that uses cold water as an intermediate coolant. Cold water is cooled in the evaporator from 12oC to 7oC and then pumped to the cooling coils for cooling. Waste heat in the condenser can be discharged into water (water-cooled chiller system) or wind (air-cooled chiller system).

– VRV system is an air conditioning system, one condenser connected to many evaporators that we, the refrigeration engineers, call a mother with many children. Directly cooling the room with evaporators, VRV also has two types of water cooling and air cooling, but mainly air cooling.

2. Cooling capacity:

– The cooling capacity of the chiller system can be from several tens of KW to tens of thousands of KW. For example, the Carrier turbine compressor water-cooled centrifugal chiller, coded 17DA8-8787, has a cooling capacity of 21,000kW and a mass of 84,600kg.

– The cooling capacity of the VRV – III 54 HP condenser is 148kW. However, a project does not limit the number of condensers, so the cooling capacity is also unlimited. Currently, there is a VRF condenser type up to 64HP with a cooling capacity of about 186kW.

3. Application:

– Chiller systems are often installed to serve factories that work 3 shifts 24/24 hours such as: fiber, printing, processing, .... In addition, they are also used for high-rise buildings and large projects with 24/24-hour cooling needs such as: Hotels, sports complexes, hospitals ... With a floor area of over 20,000m2, cooling capacity over 3000KW. The cooling demand must be relatively stable.

– VRV system is only used for comfort air conditioning in small, medium and large sized projects such as office buildings, hotels, hospitals, shops, supermarkets, restaurants... In particular, VRV has the feature of calculating separate electricity bills for each room, very suitable and energy-saving for local, distributed, unstable cooling applications.

4. Types of compressors:

– Chiller system: Many types of compressors from scroll, piston, screw to turbine

– VRV system: mainly also spiral compressor, rotor (inverter or digital)

5. Condensing equipment:

– The chiller system includes a cooling condenser and a cooling tower, in addition to an air-cooled condenser.

– With the VRV system, the condensing equipment includes an air-cooled condenser. Like the chiller system, the VRV system also has a water-cooled condenser and a cooling tower.

6. Auxiliary system:

– Chiller system: Includes cooling tower, cooling water pump system, expansion tank, piping system, accessories and cooling water pump

– VRV system: None (VRV is simpler)

7. Winter heating options:

– Chiller system: If using a cooling tower, in winter you must use a heating resistor or use a boiler to heat water. If using an air-cooled chiller, you can use a heat pump.

– VRV system: Heat pump is very convenient and efficient

8. Machine room:

– Chiller system: Need a machine room to place the chiller and pump all kinds of water.

– VRV system: No need for machine room because the condenser can be placed on the rooftop or balcony

9. Good operation:

– Chiller system: Requires a team of highly skilled workers to operate, repair and maintain regularly because it is necessary to combine the Chiller with the cooling tower system, cold water pump, boiler operation...

– VRV system: No need for operators because this system can work completely automatically, similar to a two-unit residential air conditioner.

10. Automatic capability:

– Chiller system: More difficult to automate because it requires a combination of three systems: chiller, cooling tower pump and cold water pump.

– VRV system: with this system, the automatic ability is very high because there is only one refrigerant gas circulation system similar to a two-block civil air conditioner.

11. Ability to expand the air conditioning system

– The Chiller system cannot be expanded because the water pipe and water pump systems are fixed.

– The VRV system has a very high expandability by installing additional units.

12. Cleaning and maintenance:

– With the Chiller system, maintenance is very difficult because there are many systems such as: cold, water, boiler, chemicals, cleaning equipment for condensers and cooling towers, water treatment, etc.

– The VRV system is very simple, only needing maintenance on the condenser and evaporator units

13. Noise level:

– The chiller system has a higher operating noise level due to the design of the compressor and large cooling tower.

– VRV system is lighter, compressor is designed smaller, fan capacity is small

14. Machine life and product reliability

– Chiller system has high life and reliability due to low speed

– VRV system has average life and reliability due to high speed

15. Possibility of refrigerant leakage:

– The chiller system is not capable of leaking refrigerant.

– VRV system has the possibility of refrigerant leakage.

16. Operating price:

– Chiller system: High because it requires many operators and many types of auxiliary materials.

– VRV system: Low because most of it is fully automated

17. Power consumption:

– Chiller System: High

– VRV system: Lower
