Ventilation Systems: Definition and Detailed Classification

Definition: What is a ventilation system?

The duct system helps ensure the circulation and rotation of air in a fixed space to provide a high-quality air source for the living environment in that space. For areas with closed spaces, air circulation is often more difficult, so installing this ventilation system makes air exchange easier.

The duct system combined with industrial ventilation fans from the vents helps clean the air to avoid causing stuffiness, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases. In some special cases, the ventilation system is to overcome problems such as: Spread of toxic substances or fire.

Classification of ventilation systems

To properly classify ventilation systems, we often classify them according to main directions such as: wind movement, ventilation driving force, organization method and purpose of use.

In the direction of wind movement:

  • Blowing ventilation: Blowing clean air into the room and the air in the room is discharged outside through the gaps of the room due to the pressure difference. The advantage of the blowing ventilation method is that it can supply air to necessary locations, where many people are concentrated, or where there is a lot of excess heat, excess humidity, and the circulating air speed is often large. However, the disadvantage of this method is that the pressure in the room is positive, so the air flows in all directions, so it can flow into unwanted areas.
  • Exhaust ventilation: Exhaust polluted air out of the room and outside air flows into the room through gaps or fresh air intakes due to pressure differences. Exhaust ventilation has the advantage of being able to directly exhaust polluted air at the source, not allowing it to spread into the room, the ventilation flow is therefore not too large, but highly effective. However, this method also has the disadvantage that the circulating air in the room is very low, there is almost no significant circulation, on the other hand, the air flows into the room relatively freely, so the quality of the air entering the room cannot be controlled, air from unwanted locations can flow in.
  • Combined ventilation: Combining both exhaust and blowing into the room, this is an effective method. Combined ventilation between exhaust and blowing includes a system of exhaust and blowing fans. Therefore, it is possible to actively suck polluted air at locations where toxic substances arise and supply it to locations that require the most fresh air. This method has all the advantages of the two methods mentioned above, but eliminates the disadvantages of the two types of air supply. However, the combined method has the disadvantage of higher investment costs.

According to the driving force of ventilation

  • Natural ventilation: Is the phenomenon of air exchange between indoors and outdoors due to pressure difference. Usually pressure is created by the temperature difference between the outside and inside, created by wind flow.
  • Forced ventilation: Ventilation is done by external force, that is, using a fan.

By organizational method

  • General ventilation: General ventilation for the entire room or building
  • Local ventilation: Ventilation for a special small area in a room or rooms where large amounts of hazardous substances are generated.

By purpose of use

  • Normal ventilation: The purpose of ventilation is to remove toxic substances, excess heat, excess moisture and provide oxygen for human activities.
  • Emergency Ventilation: Many buildings are equipped with a ventilation system to deal with incidents that occur. Emergency ventilation systems only operate when an incident occurs.
  • Prevent chemical spills: When incidents occur, the ventilation system operates and releases toxic gases to designated locations or outside.
  • In case of fire: To prevent fire from penetrating the stairs and exit doors, the ventilation system operates and creates positive pressure on these sections for people to escape easily.
