Classification of basement ventilation system design types
Currently, in basement ventilation system design there are 2 main types, which are:
a. Ventilation system designed with fans and air ducts. Including:
· Exhaust fan and supply fan system
· Supply and exhaust duct system
b. Ventilation system designed with only fan. Including:
· Exhaust fan and supply fan system
· Jetfan system pushes air
Basically, the difference between the two designs above is the system components (including equipment and air ducts).

Some points to note when designing basement ventilation systems
For ventilation system design with fans and ducts
· Design ventilation schematic diagram, control diagram, operating status table, etc.
· Determine the ventilation level of the basement with the requirements: dividing ventilation zones, emergency ventilation, etc.
· Calculate the ventilation flow of the supply and exhaust systems.
· Calculation of supply and exhaust duct systems. Calculation of pressure head for 1-speed or 2-speed fans.
· Calculate the elevation of the air duct, the position of the exhaust or supply fan shafts.
· Calculate the size of the louvers and air vents.
· Select exhaust fans, supply fans, CO sensors, etc.
For ventilation system design using only fans
· Determine the ventilation level of the basement and requirements such as: dividing ventilation areas, emergency ventilation, etc.
· Calculate ventilation flow for supply and exhaust systems.
· Choose from a range of Jettfan systems with 1-speed or 2-speed fans.
· Calculate the reasonable distance between fans. Calculate the height, fan tilt angle, etc.
· It is necessary to check with CFD software to simulate wind flow for tunnels with an area of 2,600 m2 or more.
· Calculate the size of the louvers and air vents.
· Select exhaust fans, supply fans, CO sensors, etc.
· Design schematic diagrams of ventilation, control, operating status tables, etc.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Basement Ventilation System Design Methods
For ventilation systems using fans and ducts
The required ventilation flow always depends on the area of the basement. Therefore, for large basements, if the design using fans and air ducts is applied, there will be obstacles:
· Difficulty in coordinating the duct system with other MEP systems
· If the tunnel has a low ceiling height, it will affect the traffic height.
· For systems using large fans and long ducts, additional costs will be required for soundproofing treatment.
However, currently in Vietnam, most projects are still designed this way because:
- Suitable for medium-small sized basements, or basements with high ceilings.
- Approved by state authorities
For ventilation system use exhaust fan and Jettfan
Compared with the design using fans and ducts, this design offers more advantages:
Significantly reduces ductwork and air vents in both supply and exhaust systems
- Suitable for basements, parking lots with above ground design or with open sides. In this case, the system only needs to be designed with Jettfan fans, no need for supply or exhaust fans.
- Widely used in large basements of many projects in many countries around the world.
However, due to the limited CFD simulation appraisal mechanism in Vietnam, this ventilation system design method is not widely used and rarely applied to projects in our country.

Hopefully, the above sharing will bring you more useful information about the 2 main basement ventilation system designs currently used in Vietnam and around the world.
