Limits and standards of EI fire-proof smoke exhaust ducts

What is EI fire-proof smoke exhaust duct?

Fire-resistant smoke exhaust duct, also known as EI fire-resistant duct, is a normal type of duct but is integrated with fire-resistant insulation, ensuring full compliance with integrity factors (E) and insulation capacity (I) when a fire occurs for a certain period of time.

Fireproof ducts are duct systems that need to meet certain fire resistance limits such as: EI 30; EI 45; EI 60; EI 90 and EI 120, ... They are made of fireproof materials with fire resistance limits.

The term EI is understood as follows:

E (Integrity): limit of material integrity. At that limit, the structure remains intact without collapsing, cracking, or being geometrically deformed...

I (Thermal Insulation): limit of thermal insulation capacity. The limit at which the material can still maintain its thermal insulation capacity, stabilizing the main structure of the material without being destroyed by temperature.

Location of fireproof ducts according to each EI limit:

The location of fire-resistant ducts according to each limit is clearly stated in the appendix.

  • D – Regulations on smoke protection for houses and buildings are quoted from QCVN 06:2020/BXD. Specifically
  • EI 120: For pipes and smoke ducts located outside the scope of the fire compartment that the system serves. At this time, at the locations where the pipes and smoke ducts pass through the fire compartment walls and floors, normally open fire dampers must not be installed.
  • EI 60: For pipes and ducts within the fire space served. Also when used for exhausting smoke from enclosed parking garages.
  • EI 45: For vertical smoke ducts and channels located within the scope of the fire compartment being served. Also when extracting combustion products directly in that service area
  • EI 30: For other cases within the scope of the fire compartment served.

What standards must fireproof air ducts meet?

"In the latest regulations according to Decree 136 on the Law on Fire Prevention and Fighting; Regulation QCVN 06:2020/BXD - National technical regulations on fire safety for houses and buildings; the standards of the air duct system applied in this new fire protection system have much higher changes. In which, the air duct and the external exhaust equipment, in addition to ensuring the standard TCVN 5687:2010. They must also be made from fireproof materials with fire resistance limits including different EI limits"

Fireproof air duct inspection standards:

According to QCVN06:2020 National Technical Regulation on Fire Safety for Houses and Constructions. Fire-resistant air ducts are tested according to ISO 6944: 1985

This standard defines how to perform the fire test and how to interpret the various criteria.

Standards divide different fire-resistant duct systems into 2 groups:

  • Duct Type A – Fire Outside Duct
  • Class B Duct Fire – Fires within ducts

The fire resistance of a ductwork system shall be expressed in minutes of heating time until failure according to one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Stability

If the duct passes the stability criteria in the case of a type A duct, the entire duct will not collapse, nor will any internal or external parts of the furnace.

If the duct meets the stability criteria in the case of a type B duct, the duct outside the furnace will not collapse. This means that a type B duct can collapse inside the furnace (or in fact inside the fire compartment).

  1. Integrity

If the duct passes the stability criterion in the case of a Type A duct, the entire duct will not collapse and both ducts, Type A and B, will pass the integrity criterion if during the fire test there are no cracks, holes or other openings outside the furnace through which flames or hot gases can pass through the duct.

  1. Insulation

The ducts will meet the insulation criteria if the measured temperature rise of the duct does not exceed the maximum allowable temperature rise according to test standard ISO 6944.
